A passive cocked wah sound on a Telecaster

As I posted recently, I had modified my Voodoo Telecaster to add out of phase switching. For the second push/pull pot I had been considering the “Arlo Cocked Wah” modification.

Alfie on the SixStringBliss forum had suggested that using the tone on a Tele can give a good honky sound. Playing around with this I stumbled on something… with the middle selector switch (bridge and neck selected) and the two pickups out of phase, this takes a lot of the bass out of the signal. If I roll down the tone control on the guitar this cuts the top end, leaving just a very honking middle sound – hey presto – cocked wah!

You can hear it for yourself on this brief demo, which covers;

  1. Both pickups in phase, tone turned to max
  2. Both pickups out of phase, tone turned to max
  3. Both pickups out of phase, tone turned to min

Recorded into Reaper using Amplitube’s Orange Tiny Terror model.

  2. haha.. never mind… it just came up…. soundcloud flash

  3. wow… that’s very honky for a passive circuit, it does sound like a cockd wah, and because its not so dramatic would sit well in many mixes… cool mod dave!

    • Thanks Alfie. I’m really pleased with how it sounds. Not had chance to properly record with it yet but I think you’re right about it sitting in a mix well.
